Tab Groups Rock · Effective 2026-10-22
Tab Groups Rock does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any data. It has no servers, no analytics, no accounts, and no advertising. Everything it does happens in your browser and on your computer.
What the extension reads
- Titles and web addresses of the tabs in the groups you choose to save. Nothing is read until you pick groups in the popup or use the right-click menu item. The extension never reads the content of web pages.
- The names and colors of your tab groups, so it can list them for you and put them in the note.
- Your bookmark folders under “Archived groups”, only to avoid overwriting a folder that already has the same name.
- To Obsidian on your own computer. The note is placed on your clipboard and Obsidian is opened with an
obsidian:// link that tells it to create the note from the clipboard. While it is on the clipboard, other apps on your computer can read it, as with anything you copy.
- To a Markdown file you download, if you choose Save file.
- To your Chrome bookmarks, if “Also save each group as a bookmark folder” is on in settings. Bookmarks are stored by Chrome. If you use Chrome sync, Chrome syncs them to your Google account the same way it syncs any bookmark you make.
Nothing is sent to the developer or to any other party.
What the extension stores
- Settings (vault name, default folder, and your choices in settings) in Chrome’s sync storage. If you use Chrome sync, Chrome syncs these to your other browsers.
- A flag recording that the first-run hint was shown, in Chrome’s local storage.
- The notes being sent during a save, in Chrome’s session storage. Chrome clears this when the browser closes, and the extension removes it once the save page has picked it up.
Uninstalling the extension removes all of its stored data. Notes in your vault, downloaded files, and bookmark folders stay where they were written, since they are yours.
Permissions
- Tabs and tab groups: read the titles and addresses of the tabs you choose to save, and close them if you ask.
- Storage: keep your settings.
- Clipboard write: hand the note to Obsidian. The extension never reads your clipboard.
- Context menus: the right-click “Save this tab’s group to Obsidian” item.
- Bookmarks: write the optional bookmark folder for each saved group.
